Barking, A Dog’s Language

Maggie at 8 weeks old. She is so cute isn’t she? At 8 weeks old I thought it was cute too. Now she is 11 weeks old and this is the equivalent to your teenage child talking back!

We started telling her “no”, which was a word she was hearing a lot. If she saw it, it was in her mouth and she was chewing on it. That also meant your hands, arms, feet, toes, and oh yes, let’s not forget head, hair, ears, face, nose, lips…….get the idea?

I had heard that if you flick them on their nose when they bit you, that they would stop. Not her. She saw that as a challenge. Her eyes would dilate, she wrinkles up her nose and starts barking at you in a high pitch and snapping at you. Hence her new name ”Chompers”.

If you point your finger at her and reprimand her, you’re in for a lot of snarling back talk! We are working on it, and we’re gaining, but she is not going to concede easily.

My point however is this: their bark, growl, cry etc. actually mean something. Baying means your dog is on the chase, whining means she’s frustrated, howling means he’s calling the pack, growling when playing means she’s playing tough, growling when confronting someone means he’s mad, and yipping means she’s hurt, according to Helen Fazio, Travel Dog Blogger www.traveldogbooks.com/

Thanks to Helen, I now know Maggie is “playing tough”.

Our Beloved Scooter!

My mom first brought Scooter home from the rescue animal shelter for dachshunds. He was a long haired standard dachshund and the color of his coat was a very pretty brownish red. I loved his ears the most because they were so shaggy with the long hair.

Well when they brought him home I asked my mom what his name was and they said Trey, but we had to name him different because I had a cousin named trey and it would have been to confusing. After we thought it over with we came up with Scooter, I loved it and so did everyone else! Scarlet our other dog (she is a short hair miniature dachshund) loved him as soon as Scooter stepped inside the door. They played and played until it was time to go to bed. The next day he came into my room and woke me up by licking on my face, he wanted to play so I got up and got dressed and went out side and played with him.

Years and years later my parents moved to Midlothian TX. Scooter was about 13 or 14 years old, I couldn’t remember very well. I thought he was just fine and he played as usual. Then his birthday rolled around and we realized he was 15 years old. One day I came over and Scooter wasn’t himself. He didn’t eat and he barely even slept. I thought that he had a stomach virus so that could be treatable. Well 2 weeks later they were saying that he had cancer and there was nothing they could have done. I was so mad and I just stormed out crying. I just wanted to be left alone.

About 2 to 4 weeks later Scooter passed away in his sleep. They found him just lying there not breathing. I wanted to say one last goodbye and I never got to. I miss my Scooter and I never stop thinking about him and I never stop crying because he mean’t so much to me!!!!!

How Many Dogs (or Cats) Does it Take to Change a Light Bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. And then I’ll replace any wiring that’s not up to code.

Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and you’re inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

Dachshund: You know I can’t reach that stupid lamp!

Rottweiler: Make me. Just go ahead and try to make me!

Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

German Shepherd: I’ll change it as soon as I’ve led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven’t missed anyone, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

Jack Russell Terrier: I’ll just pop it in while I’m bouncing off the walls and furniture.

Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I’m sorry, but I don’t see any light bulbs!

Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

Chihuahua: ‘Yo quiero Taco Bulb’ or ‘We don’t need no stinking light bulb.’

Greyhound/Saluki: It isn’t moving. Who cares?

Heeler/Australian Cattle Dog: First, I’ll put all the light bulbs in a little circle…

Poodle: I’ll just blow in the Border Collie’s ear and he’ll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?

Cats do not change light bulbs! People change light bulbs! So, the real question is:

‘How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?’

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!

Mother Doberman says “Thank You”

The Doberman is pregnant. The fireman had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, then he continued to fight the fire.

When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest. A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina Newspaper, noticed the dog in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw the Doberman walking straight toward the firefighter and wondered what she was going to do.

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had just saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

Joe’s Jacob Gunner “Jake”

I met Jake when I met my husband Joe. Jake was 12 years old by then. He was Joe’s side kick- always with him all day and all night. Up until that moment I was fairly scared of dogs- especially big ones like Jake. Jake was large for his breed (German Shorthaired Pointer) but his loyal attitude to Joe and his non threatening demeanor made me realize I shouldn’t be scared of dogs.
Jake was the epitome of a “working dog”
He was a “boat dog” being that Joe is a Captain of a fishing boat- every night- in the late hours usually; Jake would ride down with Joe and get on the boat for however long it took to get the catch. Jake had an incredible talent for climbing the almost completely vertical iron staircase to get up to the wheelhouse. He walked the rail of that big boat with ease. When they would unload the catch, just Jake’s presence would keep the seals backed off so they didn’t eat the fish while they were being unloaded. They were partners.
Jake was also Joes hunting partner. As anyone knows a hunters’ dog is their best friend. This was true with Joe & Jake. Field after field, in the bitter cold or the extreme heat of the desert Jake only want was to find the birds and please Joe. It’s really a beautiful thing to watch a dog so loyal to his master.
12 is pretty old for the Pointer breed and by 13 Jake was showing his age. We had taken him up to a cabin that we stay at and while following Joe fishing he fell down a cliff. Joe was able to rescue him and he survived but the fall exacerbated the joint pain that he had been recently experiencing. He could no longer go to work with Joe. All the years of living on the steel boat had disintegrated most of the tissue in his joints and caused constant pain for him. It was very sad when the day came and Joe left for work and Jake has to stay behind.
Jake spent his last year as a house dog. His pain got worse and worse until finally the day came where we had to feed him while he lay in bed. The choice had to be made to put him down. Joe had had to put his previous dog down but I had never been through it. Truly one of the saddest things. We were in the vet room promising not to leave him until he was out of pain. We brought him a big hamburger hoping that the joy of getting to eat something like that while we loved, petted and talked to him would be the best way for him to leave this world. I will never forget watching the life leave him all the while telling him what a good boy he was.
We cried for weeks swearing that we would never get another dog because nothing could replace him and the pain of losing a dog is almost unbearable at the time you’re going through it. We did not want to go through that again.
9 months later while doing a search on the internet we found Jakes breeders (whom Joe hadn’t spoken with in 12 years) and they had Pointer puppies from Jakes bloodline. We contacted him and picked out the sweetest baby boy….and named him Jedediah Jake in honor of Jake.

That old expression "I have to watch you like a hawk" is never more true than when we're talking about our furry friends. They will eat just about anything.

Dogs especially, some just have a natural tendency to gnaw but sometimes they chew out of boredom. Properly exercising your dog with vigorous play time will help in more ways than one. They will be tired and ready to relax when they are indoors, but they will also be more happy and content and not look for the "bad" ways to relieve stress.

Cats aren't quite as bad as dogs but they have their moments too, we know how they love to eat the house plants! Curly ribbons on packages and tinsel on trees are just begging to be played with. Unfortunately once they start to eat it they can't stop until the end of the ribbon. It's one long string that they do not bite in two and then swallow so they ingest several inches or sometimes even feet of this hazardous material.
